Enclosure size chart

Floor space should equal or exceed the snake's total length. Weight is the more reliable indicator because it accounts for body condition, not just skeletal length.

Tub vs tank

Tubs & Racks

Hold humidity better. Maintain consistent temperatures. Cost less per animal at scale. Most breeders use racks.

Tanks & PVC

Better for display animals or naturalistic setups. PVC enclosures are superior to glass for heat and humidity retention.

When to upgrade

Upgrade when your ball python's weight crosses into the next category. Do not wait for them to "look cramped."

  • The snake cannot fully stretch along the longest wall
  • The water dish takes up more than 15% of floor space
  • Temperature gradient is impossible to maintain
  • The snake consistently pushes against the sides or lid

Questions

Common questions

Yes, but the fix is clutter, not a smaller enclosure. Add hides, cover, and visual barriers. A large enclosure with adequate cover does not stress a ball python.

A 41-quart tub (28L x 16W x 6H inches). Sub-adult category. Next upgrade at 1200g to an FB70 or 70-quart tub.

Floor space matters more than height. A 12-inch height is sufficient for tubs. PVC enclosures at 24 inches allow enrichment opportunities.

An FB70 tub (34L x 20W x 7H) or a 4x2x2 PVC enclosure for 1200-2500g females. Males can stay in a 41-quart tub permanently if under 1200g.
