A breeder-to-breeder talk
Hard markets do not last forever. What you build inside one can change your business forever.

thing is always yours to control, whatever the market does

There are seasons in this business when everything feels harder.

The short version
  • Hard seasons separate breeders. Sometimes the market really is this difficult, and you still decide what you do inside it.
  • Two roads. Wait for the market to come back and rescue you, or get better. Only one of those is yours to choose.
  • Get better on purpose. Study your genetics, fix your photography, clean up your brand, answer your people, build projects with purpose.
  • Heavy is not the same as failing. Take inventory of what to improve, what to stop, and what to learn.
  • Build through it. Hard markets do not last forever, and what you build inside one can change your business forever.

Why it feels this hard right now

Animals sit longer. Messages slow down. Prices soften. And the feed bills? They don't stay stubborn, they double on you. Mine did, last week, because my vendor decided it was "time for a price increase." Time for a price increase. I nearly rolled my eyes out of my head.

And look, I get why we're here. Auctions are multiplying on MorphMarket. The economy has everybody holding their wallet a little tighter. Put those two things in a room together and of course this is the mess we land in. It makes perfect, maddening sense.

You still decide what you do inside it

But here's the truth. The part I want to tell you.

Somewhere in the middle of all of this, it gets really easy to start asking:

Why am I doing this? Why aren't my animals selling? Why does it look easier for everyone else? Is this even worth it anymore?

I've asked every one of those. Out loud, usually, standing in the snake room at an hour no reasonable person is awake.

But hard seasons have a way of separating people. Not because everyone who struggles isn't working hard enough. Sometimes the market really is this difficult. But you still get to decide what you do inside of it.

Get better, or wait it out

You can stop learning, stop posting, stop improving your animals, stop answering your people, and wait for the market to come back and rescue you.

Or you can get better.

Study your genetics. Learn what buyers truly want. Fix your photography, the lighting, the backgrounds, all of it. Clean up your brand. Answer your customers like you mean it. Build projects with purpose. Make smarter pairings. Watch the breeders doing something exceptional and learn from them instead of resenting them. And keep showing up on the days it would be so much easier not to.

Because the breeders who come out the other side of a market like this one stronger? They will not be the ones who waited.

They will be the ones who used it.

I've always believed there is a massive difference between wanting something and building something. Wanting is easy. Building is what you do long after the excitement wears off. And breeding might be the purest example of that there is. Some of the projects I believe in right now will not pay me back for years. That takes patience. Discipline. Conviction you cannot fake.

Take inventory

So if things feel heavy right now, do not automatically read that as a sign you are failing.

Take inventory.

Ask yourself
What can you improve? What should you stop doing? What do you need to learn? What does your collection need to become? And five years from now, what kind of breeder do you want people to remember you as?

Then get back to work.

What you build inside a hard market

You do not need to control the whole market. You only need to keep controlling what is yours to control.

Build better. Learn faster. Stay intentional. Protect your standards. Keep going.

Hard markets do not last forever.

But what you build inside one can change your business forever.

Now, go check your water bowls. I know you've been sitting here reading this instead.

Run the whole snake room.
